Types of Mobile Elevating Work Platforms (MEWPs):

There are two primary types of MEWPs:

  1. Scissor Lift: Utilizes hydraulic pistons and an expanding scissor mechanism to raise and lower platforms, which can vary in configuration and extension capabilities. Some models feature extendable or rotatable platforms, with safety precautions such as retracting extendable platforms before movement.
  2. Boom Lift: Includes telescopic, articulating, or combined booms, raised and extended via hydraulic cylinders. These can extend beyond the wheelbase and require operators to be aware of machine rotation and stability, as the center of gravity shifts with boom movement. All MEWPs must undergo biannual inspections by qualified third-party inspectors, who perform visual and functional assessments.

Major Components of MEWPs:

  • Base
  • Lifting mechanism
  • Platform assembly

Types Based on Surface Compatibility:

  • On-slab models: Designed for smooth, hard surfaces like concrete or pavement; typically have solid rubber tires and are powered by rechargeable batteries or internal combustion engines. They often feature pothole protection.
  • Rough-terrain models: Suitable for uneven surfaces such as gravel or compacted soil; equipped with wider wheels, pneumatic tires, and sometimes outriggers for stability. Powered by internal combustion engines or DC units, with hydraulic lifting mechanisms.

Additional Notes:

  • Boom types can be telescopic, articulating, or a combination, and are controlled hydraulically. Operators should be cautious of machine rotation and stability, especially as boom length and angle change.
  • Stability is critical; the machine may overturn if the center of gravity moves outside the base.
  • Regular inspections are mandatory to ensure safety and compliance.

Potable Water Tanks:

A potable water tank stores drinkable water and must comply with Dubai Municipality’s food safety regulations. Recent directives classify water tanks in schools, hotels, malls, tourist attractions, and other commercial or public buildings as potable water tanks, supporting Dubai’s initiative to promote drinkable tap water.

Common Types of Potable Water Tanks:

  • Reinforced Cement Concrete (RCC) Tanks: Typically located in basements or ground levels, used for raw, filtered, or chilled water storage.
  • Glass-Reinforced Plastic (GRP) Tanks: Suitable for ground or upper levels, these are the most common for water storage.
  • Plastic Tanks: Often used in schools due to affordability but tend to age poorly and require replacement after a few years.
  • Galvanized Steel Tanks: Rarely used for potable water storage.

Inspection Requirements:

Dubai Municipality mandates inspections for all domestic water tanks in various premises, excluding private villas. Owners must obtain a conformity certificate to avoid penalties. B Safe Safety is an accredited inspection body capable of certifying tanks, ensuring compliance with local regulations.

Inspection Focus:

  • Chemical Properties: pH, TDS, chlorine, bromate, and E. coli testing.
  • Physical Condition: Checking for rust, cracks, uncovered openings, and overall integrity.

Reporting and Certification:

Post-inspection, an initial report and lab results are provided. If satisfactory, a one-year certification is issued. If issues are found, corrective actions are advised, and re-inspection is conducted after rectification. B Safe Safety emphasizes clear, accurate documentation to facilitate compliance.
